10 Best Things to Do in Lunenburg

Lunenburg is one of the prettiest towns in Nova Scotia and a must-visit on the South Shore. With colourful buildings, fresh seafood, and fascinating history, it’s a place that feels both lively and laid-back.

We’ve visited Lunenburg several times over the years, starting with our first road trip to Nova Scotia before we moved here. I still remember sitting on the wharf having a picnic lunch on a sunny day — colourful houses across the water and barely a crowd in sight. Since then, we’ve visited in every season: walking the quiet streets in winter, warming up with coffee from Laughing Whale, stopping in after the Mahone Bay Scarecrow Festival, and most recently staying overnight (without the kids!) for dinner, drinks, and a morning run to the golf course for one of the best views of town.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a day trip from Halifax, here are the top things to do in Lunenburg — plus a few ideas for nearby stops.

Top things to do in Lunenburg Nova Scotia

Lunenburg is small enough to explore on foot, which makes it easy to take your time and enjoy the details — from the colourful buildings to the harbour views. Whether you’re here for a quick stop or a full weekend, these are the must-see spots and experiences that make Lunenburg so special.

1. Visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic

The Fisheries Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Lunenburg — and it’s easy to see why.

The museum tells the story of Nova Scotia’s fishing industry, from the Mi’kmaq people to modern-day fishing techniques. Step aboard the Theresa E. Connor, Canada’s oldest saltbank schooner, and walk below deck to see what life was like for generations of fishermen. Kids (and adults) will love the tidal touch tank for a hands-on look at local sea creatures.

2. Take a Walking Tour

One of the best ways to explore Lunenburg is on foot. You can wander on your own, but a guided walking tour brings the town to life with insights and interesting stories, like the Lunenburg ‘bumps’ that you’ll see all throughout the town.

Lunenburg Walking Tours offers several options, including architecture tours, a Bluenose history tour, and even a Haunted Lunenburg tour — perfect if you enjoy a little ghostly storytelling. (If you’re into spooky experiences, check out our full post on haunted tours in Nova Scotia for more ideas.)

Did you know? Lunenburg’s Old Town is one of two urban UNESCO sites in North America, as well as a National Historic Site of Canada.

3. See the Bluenose II

The Bluenose II is the pride of Lunenburg and a must-see on any visit. This replica of the original undefeated racing schooner often docks right on the waterfront.

If you’re lucky enough to visit when it’s in port, you can book a two-hour cruise through the harbour. Even if it’s not sailing, stop by for photos — the Bluenose is featured on the Canadian dime, and there’s even a giant dime sculpture nearby for a fun photo op.

Did you know? The Bluenose is featured on the Canadian dime and you can find a large size dime on the Lunenburg waterfront. It makes a great photo op!

4. Sample the Seafood

Lunenburg is known for its incredible seafood, and you have plenty of choices.

Try a lobster roll at the South Shore Fish Shack or sit down for a meal at The Grand Banker Bar & Grill overlooking the harbour. We’ve also enjoyed excellent meals at the Dockside Restaurant and Salt Shaker Deli — the perfect spot to grab takeout and enjoy your food on the wharf.

5. Explore the Waterfront

The Lunenburg waterfront is one of the prettiest in Nova Scotia. Take your time strolling along the boardwalk, admiring the boats, and soaking in the view of those iconic colourful houses.

There are plenty of benches and chairs where you can sit with a coffee or picnic (one of my favourite memories from our first visit!). There’s also a wooden boat and a giant lobster net that kids will love to climb in – perfect for a quick play break.

6. Visit Ironworks Distillery

Housed in a historic blacksmith shop, Ironworks Distillery is a favourite stop for adults.

Pop in for a tasting of their small-batch spirits, made with local ingredients. Their Bluenose Rum is a popular choice, but don’t skip the vodka (made from Nova Scotia apples) or the gin.

7. Shop at the Farmers Market

If you’re visiting on a Thursday morning, don’t miss the Lunenburg Farmers Market.

It’s a great place to pick up fresh produce, baked goods, or snacks for a picnic. In summer, the market spills outside, giving it an extra lively feel.

8. Go Whale Watching

Lunenburg is one of the top spots in Nova Scotia for whale watching. Tours run from May to October and last about three hours.

While whale sightings aren’t guaranteed, chances are good you’ll spot harbour seals, dolphins, or even puffins. Plus, you’ll get incredible views of Old Town Lunenburg from the water.

9. Visit the Lunenburg Academy

This striking Victorian building overlooks the town and is one of Lunenburg’s most photographed spots. It was once a school and is now a community space, library, and cultural centre. Even if you don’t go inside, the view from the hill is worth the walk.

10. Enjoy the View from the Golf Course

One of the best photo spots in Lunenburg is from the golf course just outside of town — it’s where you’ll get that classic view of the harbour and colourful houses.

You can either walk or drive over. Stop at the entrance to the golf course for a quick photo, or head up the hill toward the clubhouse where you’ll find a dedicated parking spot just for taking photos.

On our last overnight trip, we went for a quick morning run out to this viewpoint. The clouds were rolling in, but we made it back just before the rain started — and even on a grey morning, the view was worth it.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Lunenburg, from boutique hotels to bed and breakfasts.

Where to Stay in Lunenburg

I recommend staying overnight if you can — it’s worth seeing the town after the day-trippers leave.

Rum Runner Inn – This is where we stayed on our most recent trip, right across from the waterfront. The rooms are comfortable, some with harbour views, and it’s within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants.

Lunenburg Arms Hotel – Another great option in the heart of town, with spacious rooms (some with harbour views) and an onsite spa.by.

Smugglers Cove Inn – A great option on Montague Street, just a block from the waterfront, with bright, airy rooms. Perfect for a simple, central stay.
